Motability enables you to turn your mobility allowance into a brand new car and is a worry-free service that helps disabled people and their families in the UK to become more mobile. Over 500,000 people currently have a car with Motability, and it’s nice to know that we can help!
Motability - How the scheme works
The Motability Scheme enables anyone in receipt of a higher rate mobility allowance (such as the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment or the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance) to use their mobility allowance to lease a car, scooter, powered wheelchair or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle.
You simply exchange all, or part of your mobility allowance to lease the vehicle of your choice. You choose the vehicle you want at a price that works for you , and payments are deducted from your higher rate mobility allowance every four weeks, then paid directly to us by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Our standard lease is over three years, or five years if you are leasing a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle and we take care of running costs such as insurance for up to three named drivers (this doesn’t have to be you), servicing, maintenance, breakdown cover, tyre repair and replacement and windscreen repairs. All you need to do is add fuel and go.
How your vehicle can be used
Before you can lease a vehicle through the Motability Scheme, you’ll need to make sure that you’re happy with the Scheme’s terms and conditions and understand how the vehicle can be used.
We'll ask you to make sure:
- The car is used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means other named drivers in the household can use the car for shopping and other routine activities, as long as the disabled customer will benefit.
- Only named drivers listed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance can drive the car*.
- That you let us know about any changes that may affect your lease.
*We will only accept drivers who have a legally valid driving licence. Drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to additional checks.
